Ryder Schlafman-Hieb, 8, Jamestown, shares a confidence with Miss America Cara Mund Saturday in Jamestown. Ryder traveled to Disney World in February 2017 as part of the Make-A-Wish program. Mund was in Jamestown for the Denim & Diamonds Gala, which raised money for Make-A-Wish and the JakeStar program.

Cara Mund, Miss America, promoted Make-A-Wish ND at the Denim & Diamonds Gala in Jamestown Saturday. Mund is the first Miss America from North Dakota and the first to have Make-A-Wish as her platform.

Miss America 2018 Cara Mund will be the keynote speaker at the fourth annual Denim & Diamonds Gala, a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish North Dakota and JakeStar Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to keeping children safe. Employees of Ave Maria Village and the Heritage Centre donated $398 to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. Maj. Teri Nauta, of the Salvation Army, holding the symbolic check, accepted the donation. Ave Maria had residents, under the direction of Deacon Ken Votava, ring bells at the mall in December. Employees also donated their casual days money.
