Miss America 2018 Cara Mund will be the keynote speaker at the fourth annual Denim & Diamonds Gala in Jamestown.

Lynn Lambrecht, sales manager at Ingstad Family Media, said gala organizers sent a request to the Miss America organization to see if Mund would speak at the event. Lambrecht has helped organize the gala since its first year. She said Mund supports the Make-AWish organization. Some of the proceeds from the gala support Make-AWish North Dakota.

“We are very excited to have Miss America speaking at the gala,” she said.

Lambrecht said about 140 tickets were sold for last year’s gala and they are hoping 200 people attend this year’s event.

“Having Miss America Cara Mund speak at the gala, we could get a good crowd here,” she said.

The gala includes a dinner, a live auction and silent auction, entertainment by Midwest Dueling Pianos, and Mund as the speaker.

Lambrecht said Midwest Dueling Pianos is back for a second performance as the act was very popular with last year’s audience.

JakeStar Inc., which produces the Denim & Diamonds Gala, is a nonprofit organization founded in 2012 after an accident took the life of 8-year-old Jacob Schockman, of LaMoure, N.D., in April 2012. Family and friends held the first JakeStar Festival later that year. The gala replaced the festival as a fundraiser to help the nonprofit achieve its goals of keeping children safe.

According to information provided by JakeStar Inc., the first Denim & Diamonds Gala was held in 2015. Now proceeds from the event go to Make-AWish North Dakota and JakeStar. JakeStar Inc. uses the funds to sponsor North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department’s ATV safety training. Lambrecht said part of the funds from the gala are used so that any child of legal age who wants to take the ATV safety training may do so for free.
